Taiwan’s banks sit inside a USD 760 billion high-tech economy and, by the account of TeamT5’s Charles Li, have near-zero capability to defend themselves against advanced attacks. That gap is what a joint effort with the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Cybersecurity and Critical Infrastructure Protection is meant to close, and SimSpace builds the exercises at the centre of it, compressing three weeks of hypothetical attack into eight-hour drills for staff working alarms and live threat displays. SimSpace cofounder Lee Rossey’s summary of the pressure Taiwanese institutions face is blunt: they are getting hammered. State-sponsored attacks have more than doubled in three years, and Taiwan absorbs roughly 55 percent of malicious cyberthreats across Asia-Pacific.
